What happens when a photographer and a writer set out to ride 3,500 miles of dirt and gravel roads through America’s so-called “flyover country”—on motorcycles?
The Great Plains Project is a six-part adventure travel series produced by PBS Lubbock (TTU Public Media) that follows photographer Jerod Foster and writer Brandon Weaver on a 15-day expedition across the American Great Plains, one of the most overlooked yet globally significant regions in the world. Riding through backroads and small towns, they encounter a landscape that’s beautiful, brutal, and full of unexpected stories.
The journey was created to be the first ride along a 3,500-mile gravel bicycle route developed by Jerod and a team of collaborators across the Great Plains states. The route has since been published as a map for others to follow, so it was vital to ensure it is both safe and meaningful. While the route would take 3–4 months to complete by bicycle, Jerod and Brandon made the journey on motorcycles to scout and document it.
What can audiences expect from the show?
Dust. Wind. Flat tires. Bug bites. Three minor crashes. But also: sweeping vistas, quiet conversations, unexpected wisdom, and encounters with farmers, ranchers, cyclists, coffee roasters, park rangers, and a Native American tribal leader — all people who help reveal the spirit of the Great Plains. From thunderstorms over the Rio Grande to the northern lights in North Dakota, The Great Plains Project offers a bold new look at a region that’s anything but ordinary.
The Great Plains Project series is currently in post-production and is expected to air next year.
